Why can’t you give a Kindle book as a gift to a fellow Kindle user?

It’s true: On Amazon.com, you can only send a printed book to someone as a gift. Amazon deftly sidesteps this issue on their Kindle gift support page, but the bottom line is that you cannot directly purchase a Kindle book for anyone but yourself. The closest you can come to giving someone a Kindle book is to send them an Amazon gift certificate and then tell them which book to buy — which is awkward, convoluted, and a bit obnoxious.

That process feels less like a gift and more like a command.

For the record, the same limitation appears to exist with the Barnes & Noble Nook, with the iPad iBookstore, and in Sony’s e-book store. (Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this matter)….

Monotype Imaging, a Massachusetts company that owns one of the largest collections of typefaces in the world, made 2,000 of its fonts available to web designers. The move follows the San Francisco-based FontShop, which put several hundred of its fonts online in February. In just a few weeks, Font Bureau, a Boston designer of fonts, will make some of its typefaces available online as well.

Apple sells 1 million iPads in a month!

Helped by a massive amount of hype ahead of launch day on 3 April this latest set of figures mean it’s selling faster than the iPhone did when it was released.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “One million iPads in 28 days – that’s less than half the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with the iPhone”.

So says Simon Wright Director of Australia’s Largest online ISP forum Whirlpool

The Federal Government’s proposed ISP-level filtering policy is costly, complicated, and will be completely ineffective. In the coming weeks, the Labor party is tipped to unveil the legislation that will compel Australian Internet Service Providers to filter the entire world wide web, with the intention of blocking access to specific web pages.

The principal objection I have is that the policy mandates that ISPs spend a huge sum of money to deploy and maintain masses of new infrastructure. Whether this burden is passed onto Australians via taxes or via increased ISP fees, we will end up paying for it. We will end up paying, and it won’t do anything.

Increase in eBook prices after a deal was struck between the Book Publishers and Apple and Amazon. Which will see an increase in the online price of US $9.99 to US$14.99.

When digital editions have cost more, or have been delayed until after the release of hardcover versions, these raucous readers have organized impromptu boycotts and gone to the Web sites of Amazon and Barnes & Noble to leave one-star ratings and negative comments for those books and their authors.

“I just don’t want to be extorted,” said Joshua Levitsky, a computer technician and Kindle owner in New York. “I want to pay what it’s worth. If it costs them nothing to print the paper book, which I can’t believe, then they should be the same price. But I just don’t see how it can be the same price.”
